Indiana confirms GM, SDI will build $3 bilion EV battery manufacturing plant

General Motors and Samsung SDI have chosen Indiana as the location for their new $3 billion electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing plant.

The joint venture plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and will create up to 1,700 manufacturing jobs in Indiana.

The announcement by Indiana's governor confirms the location for the battery cell factory that GM and Samsung SDI said in April they planned to build together in the U.S.

The decision marks a reversal for GM, which had previously opted not to proceed with a planned EV battery plant in Indiana through a partnership with LG Energy Solution.

The plant will help further GM's goal of converting its American vehicle production to electric vehicles and expanding U.S. battery cell capacity. Production from the Indiana facility is expected to power GM's future electric vehicles and support its ambitions in the rapidly growing EV market.

In summary, the joint venture plant between GM and Samsung SDI will provide a boost to EV battery cell supply in the U.S. by creating thousands of new American manufacturing jobs and generating battery cells to help power GM's pivot towards electric vehicles. The project demonstrates continued investment and movement toward electrification of transportation in the U.S. auto industry.
