Mazda Motor and Panasonic Holdings' energy unit have announced that they will commence talks to form a battery supply partnership for electric vehicles (EVs).
The collaboration will see Panasonic Energy supply Mazda with cylindrical lithium-ion batteries produced in North America and Japan for Mazda's EVs, expected to be launched in the latter half of this decade.
The partnership on lithium-ion batteries brings Mazda closer to achieving its 1.5-trillion-yen spending plan to boost EV production, which was unveiled in November.
The talks will focus on a medium to long-term partnership, with Mazda aiming to secure battery cell supply from 2025-2027 onwards or later.
