Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), a unit of Apple supplier Foxconn, has agreed to invest 16 billion rupees ($194 million) in a new electronics component manufacturing facility in southern India's Tamil Nadu state that will create 6,000 jobs.
The proposed campus will come up in Kancheepuram district near the state capital of Chennai, a source said. It will be separate from Foxconn's existing iPhone assembly plant near Chennai that employs over 35,000 workers.
"This is a major achievement for the state," Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries TRB Rajaa said, after meeting Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and other representatives.
Reuters previously reported FII was in talks to invest in the plant, aiming for completion in 2024. FII makes electronic devices, cloud service equipment and industrial robots. It's unclear if the new plant will make components for iPhones or other companies.
Foxconn plans to quadruple the workforce at its existing iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu by late 2024 to diversify beyond China, Reuters reported previously.
