In an important step.. Twitter shareholders agree to sell company to Musk

Most Twitter shareholders voted to sell the social media company for $44 billion to Elon Musk  .

Musk had told Twitter that he would not go ahead with the acquisition, arguing that he had been misled about spam accounts on the platform and had not been notified of a financial settlement the company had reached with one of its top executives. The two sides are due to fight their battle in court next month.

Shareholders were widely expected to vote in favor of selling the company after a stock market slump made Musk's $54.20 per share deal on Twitter, signed by both sides in April, look expensive in current conditions. Twitter shares are now hovering around $41.
