OpenAI is preparing to introduce advertising on its ChatGPT platform as early as February, as the artificial intelligence company looks to open up a new revenue stream to help fund its rapidly growing costs, The Information reported on Tuesday.
The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said the Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)-backed firm has begun offering chatbot ads to a small group of advertisers on a trial basis.
OpenAI is expected to limit early ad spending commitments and gradually expand access as it refines the format and pricing model, according to the report.
Ads are expected to be sold based on views rather than clicks, with OpenAI working toward a more scalable, self-service advertising platform over time, the report added.
The move comes as OpenAI faces mounting costs linked to training advanced AI models and running large-scale computing infrastructure.
