Goodbye Skype: Microsoft shuts down the popular messaging service after two decades of time

Microsoft has officially ended its popular Skype service for online chats and calls today, Monday, after approximately 22 years since its launch.

Skype began its journey with a team of engineers, becoming a popular application before being acquired by technology giant Microsoft in 2011. Microsoft announced back in February that the end of the Skype service was near, confirming that May 2025 would mark the application's closure.

The company encouraged Skype users to transition to the free Microsoft Teams service using their existing Skype accounts to ensure they could continue to communicate with their contacts and chats. It confirmed that Teams offers the same essential features that Skype users are accustomed to, such as one-on-one and group calls, text messaging, and file sharing.

In a subsequent statement, Microsoft indicated that the Skype calling panel would remain available to users with paid subscriptions, via the Skype web portal and within the Teams application after May 5, 2025.

In trading news, Microsoft’s stock (NASDAQ: MSFT) closed up 2% yesterday at $435, but saw a decrease today in pre-market trading of 1.08%.
