Meta's new Twitter rival app Threads has reached 100 million users just one week after its launch, faster than any other consumer app in history.
Threads launched last Wednesday and reached 1 million downloads within the first two hours. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the launch was "well beyond what we imagined."
Threads allows users to log in with their Instagram credentials and post text updates up to 500 characters long, along with links, photos and 5-minute videos.
The app is currently available on Apple and Android app stores in over 100 countries but has yet to launch in Europe.
The app's rapid growth shows it has the potential to pose a real threat to Twitter's dominance in the microblogging space. However, Threads will have to work hard to retain users and develop genuine engagement in order to challenge Twitter over the long term.
