Visa, BILL and Billtrust Launch AI-Powered B2B Payments Pilot to Automate Invoice Processing

Visa, BILL and Billtrust have launched a live pilot designed to enable artificial intelligence agents to complete approved business-to-business invoice payments across buyer and supplier payment platforms.

The initiative combines Visa's Intelligent Commerce capabilities with the payment automation infrastructure of BILL and Billtrust, aiming to reduce the manual processes traditionally involved in settling business invoices.

Under the pilot, authorized AI agents can initiate and complete payments on behalf of buyers once payment instructions have been approved.

The process uses Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and tokenized payment credentials to authenticate AI agents and allow them to interact with supplier payment portals without requiring traditional manual login procedures.

BILL provides the buyer-side payment agent, while Billtrust supports the supplier-side environment where payments are received and processed.

The system is designed to maintain payment controls, transaction visibility and supplier oversight throughout the process.

According to the companies, the pilot is already processing live end-to-end transactions involving participating buyers and suppliers.

The development addresses a longstanding challenge in business payments, where invoice processing often requires employees to manually enter payment information into separate supplier portals.

By allowing authenticated AI agents to perform these activities, the companies aim to reduce administrative work while preserving established approval and security requirements.

The pilot also represents a practical application of agentic AI in financial services, extending artificial intelligence beyond document analysis and administrative assistance into approved financial transactions.

For Visa, BILL and Billtrust, the project creates an opportunity to evaluate how AI-driven payment execution can operate across different financial platforms.

Although the pilot is live, the companies have not announced a timetable for general commercial availability.

The initiative highlights the growing potential of trusted AI agents to support business payment automation while keeping authorization and financial controls in place.
