BlackRock has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, a proposed actively managed investment product designed to provide exposure to Bitcoin-related returns while seeking to manage certain downside risks.
The fund, proposed under the ticker PBIT, would use options strategies linked to BlackRock's existing iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, alongside short-term fixed-income investments and cash equivalents.
Rather than holding Bitcoin directly, the proposed ETF would employ a series of overlapping options positions to establish defined exposures to market movements. Its strategy includes purchasing call options and selling other calls at higher strike prices, potentially limiting participation in strong Bitcoin rallies.
Although the structure is designed to reduce some downside exposure, BlackRock has emphasized that the product would not guarantee investors protection against losses. Its overall performance would depend on market conditions, portfolio adjustments and the behavior of the underlying options.
The filing illustrates the growing sophistication of cryptocurrency-linked investment products as asset managers move beyond straightforward spot Bitcoin exposure toward strategies focused on income, volatility management and portfolio diversification.
The ETF remains a proposal and has not yet been approved for trading.
