Nottingham Building Society has deployed a new Microsoft Fabric data lake as part of a wider digital transformation initiative aimed at improving customer data management and supporting compliance with the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s Consumer Duty requirements.
The project, delivered in partnership with AND Digital, was completed in 12 weeks and brings together customer information that had previously been distributed across multiple systems, including Salesforce and Sopra/SBS platforms.
By consolidating these separate data sources into a centralised environment, Nottingham Building Society aims to create a more consistent view of its customers while reducing the manual processes previously required to reconcile information across different databases.
One of the most significant improvements has been seen in customer communications relating to rate changes. According to the building society, a process that previously took around two weeks can now be completed in less than 15 minutes.
Microsoft Power BI has also been incorporated into the new data environment, giving teams improved access to reporting and analytics while allowing information to be used more efficiently across the organisation.
The technology is expected to play an important role in Nottingham Building Society’s approach to Consumer Duty, which requires UK financial services firms to demonstrate that they are delivering good outcomes for retail customers.
Centralising customer data can help the organisation identify vulnerable customers, provide information at the appropriate time and support assessments around whether financial products are delivering fair value.
Beyond regulatory compliance, Nottingham Building Society plans to expand the use of its new data infrastructure across other areas of the business. Potential applications include credit scoring, risk assessment and the development of mortgage products.
The deployment reflects a wider trend across the financial services sector as banks and building societies invest in cloud-based data platforms, analytics and automation to modernise legacy infrastructure and improve both operational efficiency and customer experience.
For Nottingham Building Society, the Microsoft Fabric implementation provides a foundation for further digital development while addressing the growing importance of reliable, accessible customer data across financial services.
